Does the Galactic magnetic field flow continuously from cloud to cloud? Do field directions within clouds align with those outside the clouds? Where and how do dust grains fail to align with the ambient magnetic field? GPIPS, the Galactic Plane Infrared Polarization Survey, is collecting the new data needed to answer these and other key questions concerning the Galactic magnetic field. GPIPS is being conducted using the Mimir instrument in its wide-field (10x10 arcmin FOV, with 0.6 arcsec pixels) imaging polarimetric mode on the 1.8 m Perkins telescope outside Flagstaff, AZ. The full GPIPS survey will consist of observations of over 3,200 overlapping 9x9 arcmin field centers covering 72 square degrees of the first Galactic quadrant. In each field, H-band (1.6 microns wavelength) linear polarimetry is used to reveal the plane of the sky projection of the magnetic field traced by unpolarized background stars. The recently completed second observing season for GPIPS netted 545 fields, or just over 12 square degrees. For each field, useful polarimetric data are obtained down to H=12 mag, resulting in about 100-140 magnetic field direction per pointing. Fields observed in this second season include MAGPIS sources, many GLIMPSE bubbles, most pulsar directions, as well as dark clouds and massive molecular clouds.
