During a scan of the Galactic plane performed in 2004, H.E.S.S. (the currently most sensitive TeV telescope) has discovered a new class of so far unidentified TeV gamma-ray sources. We propose to use XMM to perform follow-up observations on several of these sources, for which exhaustive searches in existing broadband data have revealed no obvious counterparts. The large sensitivity of XMM and its energy range up to 15 keV is required to identify the X-ray counterparts of the TeV sources despite the obscuration by gas in the Galactic plane, and will allow us to obtain morphological and spectral information which will help to identify the physical nature of this new class of high energy gamma-ray sources.
