If a pulsar has a surface-magnetic-field strength Bp greater than 0.2 Bcr, then many of its curvature gamma-ray photons whose magnetic vector is parallel to the plane containing the photon-wave vector k and the external-magnetic-field vector B will decay, splitting into two photons before the pair-production threshold is reached. By observing the polarization of the curvature gamma rays of pulsars it may be possible to estimate Bp.
