The advent of artificial satellites has brought astronomical terminology to our daily attention. This report contains simple explanations of some astronomical terms, notations, and symbols frequently used to describe the orbital motions of artificial earth satellites. Also included is a reprint of Celestial Mechanics of Artificial Satellites, by T. E. Sterne, originally published in Sky and Telescope, vol. 17, p. 66, 1957. This paper discusses various aspects of the celestial mechanics of artificial satellites.
