In 1979-80 CH Cyg showed an increasingly intense emission spectrum. Forbidden lines of O I are now present and indicate a systemic velocity of -63.4 km/s. The Na I D lines show inverted P Cygni profiles. Large numbers of permitted and forbidden lines of singly ionized metals are present. Four components of circumstellar Ca II absorption lines are present and two components of Na I can be recognized. Broad, shallow absorption lines of He I are visible; they are likely to come from a hot star or an accretion disk. Nevertheless, a chromospheric event in a single star could be responsible for many of the observed features. Soft X-rays are not observed; hence CH Cyg does not have a corona nor are high-velocity shock waves present.
