Meteorite finds in Antarctica are summarized, together with evidence that some of the rocks originated on the moon or Mars. The first Antarctic meteorite was discovered in 1912, and then none were found until 1961. Thousands have since been found, and satellite remote sensing and aerial photography have been used to identify areas where the rocks might lie. It is suggested that meteorites are carried by ice or blown by wind until they either float off on an iceberg or are collected on barren ice behind mountain barriers. Isotope dating techniques have placed the age of Antarctic chondrites at 1000-700,000 yr, average, in contrast to meteorites which have been found elsewhere in the world and are usually less than 200 yr old. Meteorite ALHA81005 is suspected of originating from the moon. It features anorthosites highly similar to lunar highland breccias, and since it is surface material new studies of meteorite impact dynamics are indicated in order to explain how the rock was transported off the lunar surface intact. A total of nine other objects found on earth are also suspected of being from Mars because of their age and gases they contain are similar to those selected in surface soil by the Viking Landers.
