The X-ray binary pulsator, SMC X-1, has been observed simultaneously over the photon range 2-1200 keV with the Ariel V satellite. The spectrum obtained shows many similarities with comparable sources in our own Galaxy (Her X-1 and Cen X-3), exhibiting a high-energy cut-off around 20 keV. Its extreme X-ray luminosity (in excess of the Eddington limit) is confirmed and a measure of its magnetic field obtained.
