A method is proposed for determining the distances of cataclysmic variables using the K (2.2 microns) magnitude of the secondary star empirically calibrated as a function of effective temperature. The V-K color is used as a convenient effective temperature parameter. The method is applied to a number of cataclysmic variables including dwarf novae, nova-like variables, the recurrent nova T CrB, and the AM Her type binary VV Pup. For systems which have previous distance estimates, the agreement is good in most cases. The method is relatively insensitive to the temperature and evolutionary state of the secondary.
