Echellograms have been obtained of the T Tauri star RU Lup over a period of decreasing light. Near minimum light (V approximately 11.6), a photospheric absorption-line spectrum was detected typical of a K-type star. Although the radial velocity of the absorption lines (-0.5 + or - 2.8 km/s) agrees closely with the dark cloud velocity (-1.1 km/s), the forbidden emission lines have a radial velocity of -13.7 + or - 5.0 km/s. The greatest surprise is in the radial velocities of the broad permitted emission lines, for which the radial velocity is found to be + or - 5.4 km/s. Possible origins of the discrepancy in velocity between the absorption lines and permitted emission lines are discussed.
