We present new radio and infrared observations which, together with other data, indicate that G 316.8A).1 is located at its near kinematic distance, 2.9 kpc, rather than the far kinematic distance (12.1 kpc) which is usually assumed.
At the near distance it is a typical H II region requiring a single 06 star for its excitation, and one of the infrared sources detected near the radio peak may be the exciting star.
