The complex spectral features and the results of recent studies for chemically peculiar (CP) stars are reviewed with the emphasis on the magnetic peculiar and mercury-manganese stars. We stress that modern analyses using high dispersion spectrographs including HDS (High Dispersion Spectrograph) at the Subaru telescope (NAOJ) and recent atomic data have revealed the presence of emission lines of some metals on mercury-manganese stars and the complex spectra on magnetic CP stars to be partly due to the absorption lines of second ionized rare earths.
