The evidence for periodical variability on a 23-day timescale during the 1997 high state of Mkn 501 is analysed in the framework of a binary black hole system (BBHS) and a lighthouse jet model (LJM). We determine the parameters required for a coherent geometrical interpretation in each scenario with special focus on the expected central mass. Their relative plausibility is then evaluated with respect to independent mass constraints derived from high energy emission models and host galaxy observations, showing that a BBHS origin appears more likely than a LJM origin.
