A formula is derived which makes it possible to determine the electron
concentration in a plasma from the number of the extreme resolved line
when there is line broadening from the combined Stark effect and the
Doppler effect. The formula is applied to a series of hydrogen line
shapes, and the conditions for its validity are discussed.
