Near-infrared polarization of L 1551 IRS 5 gas measured: 28 + or - 2 percent at H(1.6 microns), 24.0 + or - 0.7 percent at K(2.2 microns), and 19 + or - 2 percent at L-prime(3.8 microns). The polarization vectors are almost perpendicular to the major axis of the elongated structure of radio emission centered on IRS 5. These large degrees of polarization cannot be interpreted by preferential extinction due to aligned grains in the vicinity of the object; the scattering by dust grains in bipolar nebulae or a similar configuration is believed to cause the polarization. A structure of gas flow around IRS 5 is also discussed.
