The results of an IR (2.2 micron) survey of 25 real or suspected Herbig-Haro objects located in 17 dark cloud regions are presented. A total of 48 IR sources are found in 12 of the areas surveyed, while 5 regions show no sources. The survey is complete to values of K less than 8.3 mag, although significant portions of the fields are studied to a limit of K less than 10.5 mag. JHKLM photometry is given for more than half of the sources. Only in a few cases is what could be the energy source for the HH objects detected, notably HH 57 and HH 100. The strong IR source HH 100 IRS has shown a large decrease in brightness over the past six years. It is suggested that this may indicate the cooling of a hot circumstellar dust envelope, and in this context a possible relation between Herbig-Haro objects and the FU Orionis phenomenon is discussed. The energy sources for HH objects appear to be deeply embedded in dark clouds, and searches with larger telescopes at longer wavelengths will be necessary to detect them.
