Explosions that may occur in galactic nuclei or any other concentrations of matter are studied from the standpoint of celestial mechanics. It is shown that configurations formed by particles immediately after an explosion, or just before collision, are unstable, and that their shape will undergo distortions in the course of time. This effect is of a sufficiently general nature, and appears to be a major difficulty in the solution of the problem of n bodies. Some applications of the results of the analysis to stellar systems are examined.
