The Solar Tower Atmospheric Cherenkov Effect Experiment, STACEE, is designed to use 48 heliostats of a large solar facility to collect Cherenkov light produced by extensive air showers, achieving a gamma-ray threshold below 50 GeV. This technique will enable STACEE (and the similar project CELESTE) to study astrophysical objects in the 50 GeV to 300 GeV energy range for the first time. This is an important part of the spectrum for understanding many of the sources seen by EGRET. These sources have power law spectra continuing to the highest end of EGRET's sensitivity (about 10 GeV), but only a few are detected above 300 GeV. This paper presents preliminary results using 32 heliostats as well as plans and prospects for the future.
