Swift J164449.3+573451 (hereafter Sw J1644+57) was discovered when it triggered the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on 28 March 2011. This source increased in brightness in the X-ray band by at least four order of magnitude since 1990 and by at least a factor of two since early 2010. The optical-NIR, radio and X-ray observations show that Swift captured the onset of a relativistic jet from a supermassive black hole for the first time. This event is likely due to the tidal disruption of a star falling into a supermassive black hole. The consequences of this process may have been seen several times over the past two decades, but the onset of the stellar disruption event has never been observed before. We will describe the data set currently available on this event and provide the most plausible theoretical explanation of what has been observed.
