The Pioneer Venus Orbiter Ultraviolet Spectrometer (UVS) obtained images of Venus in hydrogen Lyman-alpha approximately weekly throughout the 13-year mission. We analyze the data using a two-dimensional complete-frequency-redistribution multiple scattering code. We employ the VTS3 model of the neutral thermosphere (Hedin et al., J. Geophys. Res., 88, 73, 1983). We characterize the vertical distribution of atomic hydrogen by specifying its number density n_o and vertical flux phi_o at the exobase (Paxton et al., J. Geophys. Res., 93, 1766, 1988); the flux parameter controls the amount of hydrogen in the lower thermosphere. We determine the values of n_o and phi_o that best fit the data in selected segments of the sunlit disc as a function of solar activity, taking advantage of the almost linear relationship between the PV Langmuir Probe solar activity indicator and measured solar Lyman-alpha output. We report the dependence of n_o and phi_o on latitude and local time throughout the solar cycle. In addition, we compare the near-simultaneous data taken by the Galileo and Pioneer Venus UVS's on 10 February 1990.
