We report spectroscopic observations of comet Hale-Bopp obtained at the Cassegrain and coude foci of the 2.7m telescope of McDonald Observatory. The particulars of the observations are given in the table. Dates R_h Delta dot{R_h} Molecules detected Existing Data (LCS) 27,28 Jul 95 7.1 6.2 -14.6 none 27,29,30 Aug 95 6.8 6.3 -14.9 CN 15--18 Jun 96 4.1 3.1 -18.3 OH,NH,CN,C3,C2 Scheduled Observations (2dcoude) 11,12 Oct 96 2.8 3.0 -20.7 17,18 Oct 96 2.7 3.0 -20.8 The Cassegrain observations were obtained with the Large Cass Spectrograph (LCS). This is a long-slit CCD spectrograph used at a resolving power R=600. The slit is 2.5arcmin long. Further regions of the coma can be probed by translating the telescope under computer control. These observations concentrate on the UV/blue/yellow part of the spectrum. Analysis of these observations show no detectable emissions in July 1995. However, we obtained a weak detection of CN emission during August 1995, when the comet was at R_h=6.8au (log Q =~ 25.4molsec(-1) ). A full range of molecules was seen in June 1996. The June 1996 emissions are not symmetric around the optocenter. The coude observations are planned for October 1996. They will be obtained with the 2dcoude instrument with a resolving power of 60,000. This is a cross-dispersed echelle spectrograph and we can obtain complete wavelength coverage from 0.38 to 1.05mu m.
