Type Ia supernovae currently provide the most direct evidence for an accelerating universe and for the existence of an unknown ``dark energy" driving this expansion. The 5-year Supernova Legacy Survey(SNLS) will deliver about 700 type Ia supernova spectroscopically confirmed with well-sampled g', r', i' and z' light curves. Using this definitive dataset, we will obtain a precise measurement of the cosmological parameters, ΩM and ΩΛ, and test theories of the universal acceleration by precisely measuring w, the cosmological equation of state parameter. In this presentation, the spectroscopic survey performed on 8 meters class telescopes and the preliminary results obtained on the cosmological parameters, ΩM, ΩΛ and w, after the first year of the survey are presented.
