Up to now, clear detections in the very high energy regime (VHE) from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) have only been reported from Blazar type objects. The nearby AGN M 87 (z = 0.0043) is a prominent object among the class of radiogalaxies. Earlier evidence for TeV emission from the giant radiogalaxy M 87 by the HEGRA Cherenkov telescopes has motivated observations of this object by the H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) experiment. In 2004 and 2005 about 40 hours of high quality data was taken with the complete system of four Cherenkov telescopes. Here, we report on the detection of GeV/TeV gamma-rays from M 87 with H.E.S.S at a significance level of 6.6 σ in the years 2004 and 2005.
