The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is an array of four imaging air-Cherenkov telescopes located in Namibia, in the Southern hemisphere. We report the detection of a source of very high energy gamma-rays in the direction of the Galactic Centre (GC) in observations made in 2003 and 2004. The unprecedented sensitivity of H.E.S.S. enables to strongly constrain the VHE spectrum and variablity.
