At the end of Jan. 2004, a new bright fan-shaped nebula was discovered serendipitously in the L1630 dark cloud, located in the northern part of the Orion B giant molecular cloud. At the apex of McNeil's nebula lies the young stellar object V1647 Ori, displaying since Nov. 2003 a dramatic optical/IR outburst, which is the origin of the rise of this reflection nebula. I will review the observations of V1647 Ori during its outburst obtained in 2004 with Chandra and XMM-Newton, which revealed an increase of the X-ray emission compared to the pre-outburst state, and an enhanced X-ray variability.
