Direct detection and spectral characterization of extrasolar planets is one of the most exciting but also one of the most challenging areas in modern astronomy. For its second generation instrumentation on the VLT, ESO has supported two concurrent phase A studies for a so-called "Planet Finder" dedicated instrument, the first one led by the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg and the second one led by the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Grenoble. At the end of the phase A, it has been proposed to merge the two proposals into a unique instrument. We report here on the current status of the project.
