Until 2003, only one transiting exoplanet was known, the famous HD209458b, first detected by radial velocity surveys. Then in quick succession, seven transiting planets were discovered among the candidates identified by photometric transit surveys. Five of these transiting exoplanets were identified and characterized by our team with the multi-fiber facility FLAMES/UVES on the VLT. We present the results of our Doppler follow-up of the OGLE transiting companions and discuss the properties of characterized exoplanets as well as the statistical interpretation of the transit survey in terms of system types frequency and detection efficiency. Our follow-up strategy will clearly help dealing with the high number of transiting candidates that are likely to be detected by COROT in the near future.
