In this study, we solve a key problem posed by recent Cassini-Huygens observations of Saturn's largest moon Titan: how has methane been resupplied to the atmosphere of Titan to replace that destroyed by atmospheric photochemistry ? Since Cassini-Huygens data rule out the presence of large surface reservoirs of liquid methane, methane from the interior is implicated. We propose a detailed set of mechanisms for methane outgassing based on the behavior of relevant materials under conditions appropriate to the Titan interior, and an outgassing history that explains key features of Cassini- Huygens observations.
