In this workshop we summarize the ``state of the art'' of the Diffuse
Ionized Gas. We present all the possible situations which can produce
ionization outside an H II region, as well as some of the observations
that can be performed with the GTC instrumentation and how relevant they
can be in the undestanding of the ionization mechanisms of the DIG.
