The sunspot magnetic structure of the August 2-7, 1972 active region is considered, using the four-polar, force-free magnetic field approximation. Analytic formulas are derived for the three-dimensional components of the magnetic field, the magnetic energy, and the extractable energy for a four-polar constant, alpha-symmetric field. An evaluation and comparison of the daily extractable energy values with the daily regional flare indices suggests that: (1) the energy of solar flares in this region derives from the extractable energy stored by the twisting of the magnetic fields; (2) the region's magnetic field may be approximately represented by a four-polar magnetic field; (3) the analytic solutions and transverse field configurations derived are applicable to sunspot groups which appear to resemble polarity distributions; and (4) a lower limit of extractable energy of about 8 x 10 to the 31st exists for the occurrence of flares whose importance value is not lower than 2.0.
