Attention is called to the demand for various new types of high-performance refractor telescopes that has accompanied the growing market for thermal imaging systems. In many cases, space constraints are imposed which call for telescopes with a short overall length and minimum objective aperture oversize. By employing high-order aspheric surfaces and optical materials other than germanium, compact telescopes can be produced which offer a variety of attractive features. One such design is described in detail, with emphasis given to the optical design and its influence on various system configurations.
