The detection of nine lines of the fundamental band of HeH(+), a compound of astrophysical significance which may be detectable in dense clouds or planetary nebulae, is reported. Absorption of infrared radiation generated by a tunable dye laser was monitored in a multiple-reflection discharge cell with a 100:1 mixture of He to H2. The lines detected include those from P(4)(J = 3-4) to R(4)(J = 5-4) of the v = 1-0 band. Molecular constants are derived for the v = 0 and v = 1 levels of the X 1 Sigma + state which are in agreement with the calculations of Bishop and Cheung (1979).
