The potential contributions of space-based astrometry in the next decade as planned for the Hipparcos satellite and Space Telescope to the field of binary star studies are examined. Particular attention is given to satellite capabilities for census taking of visual binaries, parallax and proper motion determinations, stellar mass and orbit determinations, searches for planetary systems, dark companions and white dwarfs, and studies of individual binaries. Expected developments in the initial phase of space astrometry are pointed out.
