Electrophoretic measurements show that goethite particles added to surface water samples from four lakes of widely-differing chemistry become negatively charged because of the adsorption of humic substances. The magnitude of the negative charge decreases with increasing concentrations of bivalent cations, Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ . It is proposed that the large molecular size of the humics causes the plane of electrokinetic shear to be some distance from the oxide surface, the shear potential being due to ionised humic functional groups not involved in adsorptive interactions with the oxide surface. This model accounts qualitatively for 1. (a) the effects of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ in terms of interactions with the humic functional groups in the shear plane 2. (b) the pH-dependence of the electrophoretic mobilities and 3. (c) the lack of effect of inorganic phosphate and silicate on the mobilities, despite the shared ability of these solutes to compete with humics for adsorption at natural concentrations.
