The equation of motion governing slender flux tubes is derived using a variational principle. I consider the interaction between the tube and its surroundings due to buoyancy, added mass (anisotropic inertia) and hydrodynamic drag. It is pointed out that the application of the simple added mass formula commonly used in the litterature is in fact limited to the case of an unstratified, non-rotating flow.
