Hydroxyl (OH) absorption with apparent optical depths of a few percent has been detected toward the nuclear continuum sources in NGC 660, 3227, 3504, 3628, and 5363. Line profiles are found to be unpolarized, and the OH main lines are approximately in their optically thin LTE intensity ratios. Line widths are exceptionally large in the cases of NGC 660 and 3628, with profile structures similar to those obtained in the Milky Way nucleus. It is suggested that molecular disks within a few hundred parsecs of the nuclei are the main source of the absorption. It is concluded in light of a comparison with negative results that such molecular sources are common in late-type galaxies, but are unlikely to be universal.
