An interferometric study was conducted of the W 51 complex in the light of the forbidden lines S III emission line at 9531 A, and an empirical model of the complex incorporating optical and radial data was proposed. The distributions of surface brightness and radial velocity over the radio emitting area were derived. Two emission maxima were found in the direction of W 51 A, which coincide with the components of g and h of the radio source G 49.5-0.4, with radial velocities of about plus 57 km/s, which are in close agreement with those determined from radio recombination and molecular line observations. The forbidden lines S III line intensities were compared with radio continuum data to map the visual extinction, which varied between 10 mag in the direction of W 51 B and up to 30 mag for W 51 A.
