While the variability of radio galaxy central objects may statistically cause an energetically important extra energy output, it causes a nonlinear Kelvin-Helmholtz instability when the magnetic field in the beam is under a certain strength rather than destroying an associated beam. A constriction occurs in the beam at a point defined by the minimum nozzle circumference divided by the beam sound speed at the center, which travels along the beam at the cool, external medium's sound speed. Radio map patches may result from subsequent constrictions, and appear especially distinct when the relativistic electrons escaping from a constriction must travel, with low Alfven speed, along the supersonic part of the beam.
