Stellar collapse is accompanied by the emission of Eν ≡ 10 MeV neutrinos and antineutrinos with an energy output Wν ≡ 6×1053erg. Annihilation of these particles (ν+ν → e++e-) in the vicinity of a collapsing object (collapsar) results in the production of an X-ray or γ-ray burst. The fraction of neutrino energy output transferred to the X-ray burst can reach α ≡ 6×10-6, with the energy output in the X-ray burst thus being Wx ≡ 3×1048erg. Searching for such bursts could be an efficient means of observing stellar collapses not accompanied by shell ejection.
