The authors present near IR observations of a region of induced star formation in the SW part of the M17 nebula. The arc shaped ionization front and the ultra-compact H II region detected in the radio continuum have been mapped at N and Q0. An IR unresolved source associated with the ultra-compact component has a very high color temperature (T(J-H) ≡ 900K) and a luminosity of 103L_sun;. A more extended and lower surface brightness source is associated with the ionization front and emits most of the observed flux at long wavelengths. It has a lower color temperature (T(N-Q0) ≡ 100K) and a greater luminosity (L ≤ 4×104L_sun;). A comparison between radio-IR results and NH3(1,1) VLA observations (Massi et al., 1986) gives a direct description of the relative locations of the ionization front, a newly formed star and high density clumps of the molecular cloud.
