Data from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite is used to investigate the origin of the ultraviolet (UV) extinction bump. Correlations of the dust temperature with the parameters of the UV bump, as derived from IUE observations, are presented. Significant correlations of the 60/100 brightness ratio with the area under the UV bump and the height of the UV bump are found. These last results suggest that the particles responsible for the UV bump are very sensitive to the strength of the radiation field. However, no significant correlation is found between the dust temperature and the width of the UV bump, as would have been expected on the basis of recent physical models.
