Recent suggestions that the mid-infrared excess and the 2174 Å extinction bump have the same origin are investigated. For this purpose, correlations between the mid infrared excess and the ultraviolet extinction parameters are examined, using a sample of 61 stars reported to have peculiar extinction properties. No correlation is found between the mid-infrared excess and the ultraviolet extinction bump or the far ultraviolet extinction rise. This result suggests that the carriers of the ultraviolet bump and the mid-infrared emission are different.
