The first clear evidence of an effect of the Bx component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) in magnetopause reconnection was obtained from polar ionospheric electric fields measured with balloons. This Bx effect results in a north-south asymmetry in magnetopause reconnection, which favors one hemisphere over the other (according to the sign of Bx) and displaces the main reconnection region from the nose to higher latitudes (according to the magnitude of Bx). Thus, the reconnection line becomes shorter when Bx is large enough, resulting in a smaller potential of reconnection.
