The origin of the volcanic activity of the Galilean satellites as a result of their orbiting in the strong magnetic field of Jupiter is considered. The maximum powers generated by the interaction of the Jovian magnetosphere with each of the moons moving across it are compared with the powers supplied by the fission in a chondritic interior, and it is noted that, in all cases, the maximum generated power is greater than the tidal dissipation power. The maximum generated powers of Io, Europa and Amalthea are shown to exceed the radiative powers, suggesting the existence of highly active volcanism on Europa as well as Io. The nature of the hot spots observed by Voyager on Io's surface and Ionian volcanism are discussed, and it is suggested that Amalthea represents the remnants of a Galilean moon whose outer layers were totally dispersed by magnetically-induced volcanic activity. The original presence of five large Jovian satellites and their rotation rates are then discussed in terms of a model of the solar system as a limiting case of a binary star.
