An investigation of the gross structure of M82 by photographic and electronographic surface photometry in the B and V passbands is presented. At equivalent radii below 90 in. and above 210 in. the reduced profiles of M82 are indistinguishable from those of normal, late type spiral galaxies. Between these radii there is evidence of an enhancement which can be attributed to scattering of light from the inner component or disk by dusk particles. This interpretation accounts for the observed polarization without resorting to arbitrary depolarization mechanisms. The M82 isophotes are clearly perturbed in the region of the minor axis filaments, and the deduced filament luminosity is approximately 1% of the underlying galaxy brightness.
