Beyond 5 μm, the ubiquitous presence of PAH-like emission features (UIBs) in all components of the ISM, including the diffuse weakly irradiated one, was fully demonstrated by ISO. The conclusion is less obvious regarding the 3.3 μm band, despite clear indications of such an universality exist. We present several observations performed at 3.3 μm with CAM-SW, pertaining to this question. The first two correspond to images through the diffuse ISM of edge-on spiral galaxies : the Milky Way on one side and NGC 891 on the other. The PAH band is detected in both cases, confirming the universal presence of the carrier of the band and, because the radiation field is weak, of its very small size, to allow for transient heating. In addition, we show that the sister band at 3.4 μm is especially enhanced in the galactic CVF spectrum, as was already predicted : if this result is confirmed, the hypothesis of alkyl groups substituted to H atoms, as the carrier of this band, would be strongly reinforced. The third set of data relates to the reflection nebula NGC 7023, where it is shown that the 3.3 μm band is found in filamentary structures that fit very precisely the filamentary structure observed in the near-IR H2 rot-vib lines : this could be an indication of the efficiency of the mechanism of formation of H2 on PAHs, proposed years ago.
