In the present paper, asymptotic methods are applied to the determination of the eigenfrequencies of Brodskii's (1979) generation equations for the poloidal and toroidal field components. The analysis is carried out within the framework of a model of the planet earth with a nonuniform distribution of the conductivity. The lower positive eigenvalue corresponding to the attenuation time of the long-lived magnetic field components is calculated.
