After the successful operation of the ISOPHOT instrument the activities in the coming years will be devoted to the calibration of the data products and their scientific evaluation. The overlaying components of the IR sky background from interplanetary to intergalactic dust have been studied in order to evaluate the extragalactic background radiation. The unidentified dust features were studied from faint cirrus clouds to bright reflection nebulae and finally extragalactic objects, covering a wide range in illuminating flux and radiation hardness. Far infrared studies of galaxies have led to an increase in the cold dust masses detected in quiet galaxies and now allow the separation of differently heated dust components in more active galaxies. Several extragalactic surveys will contribute to the question of the history of star formation in the universe. The serendipity survey at 175 μm has increased ISO's scientific return and will lead to a catalogue of more than a thousand galaxies and several hundred cold spots in the Milky Way.
