Elements with low solubility and mobility, and with short residence times in sea water, will be transferred quantitatively into detrital sediments and preserve a record of the source rock compositions. The rare earth elements (REE) (La-Lu) appear to meet those conditions. Attention is given to composition of the present upper crust, models for total-crustal composition, present lower-crustal composition, uniformity of crustal composition with time, REE patterns in Archaean sedimentary rocks, Archaean upper crustal compositions, a comparison of Archaean and post-Archaean crustal compositions, causes of the compositional change in the upper crust, models for the derivation of the Archaean crust, the growth rate of the crust, the evolution of the continental crust, recycling of continental crust through the mantle, the relationship of the crust to the mantle and the amount of terrestrial differentiation, and questions regarding a pre-Archean crust.
