The well-known peculiarities of the visual atomic line spectra of Miras have prompted analysis of the infrared atomic lines in the 2 micron region spectrum of R Leonis. The radial velocities of the infrared atomic lines are in excellent agreement with the molecular high-excitation lines. The lowest-excitation atomic lines occurring in the infrared spectra develop inverse P Cygni profiles during premaximum phases. Continuum optical depth changes during the light cycle are indicated. Brackett-y appears weakly in emission between roughly phases 0.9 and 0.1. The infrared high-excitation absorption lines, both atomic and molecular, demonstrate that a shock produced by the general pulsation of the Mira passes through the photosphere near maximum light. A brief discussion of the relationship between the very different phase-dependent behavior of the infrared and visual atomic absorption lines is presented.
