A comparison of non-linear monthly median foF2 versus R12 dependence with the CCIR recommended linear relation shows the advantage of using non-linear. Solar cycle foF2 variations are best represented by effective ionospheric indices of solar activity. The index F10.7 can give a hysteresis type of foF2 variations through the solar cycle but this effect may be explained with the help of present-day knowledge about EUV radiation.
